The story
On 1944-12-26, Pilot J D Sweeney (Flying Officer, RCAF) service number J/33848, flew Typhoon Ib serial PD459 for this duty: bombing. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: damaged by flak, multiple 20mm flak hits on aircraft including his wing tank. Engine quit from fuel starvation on approach to B.78 Eindhoven airbase, crash landed with only one landing gear down. Aircraft damaged but repairable. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 439. The location for the map is B.78 Eindhoven airbase. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Sweeney: he survived.
