The story

On Sunday 22 August 1943, a member of the 419 Sqdn, Sergeant R K Metherall, took off from an unknown RAF station in the United Kingdom. His mission is mentioned elsewhere on WW2 History Europe. He flew with a Handley Page Halifax (type II, serial JB965, code VR-W).

(Eighth Air Force):: VIII Air Support Command Missions 30A and 30B: Two Luftwaffe airfields in France are the targets: 1. 36 B-26's are dispatched to the Beaumont-le-Roger Airfield; 35 hit the target at 2110 hours; they claim 3-0-0 Luftwaffe aircraft; 1 B-26 is lost and 8 are damaged; casualties are 1 WIA and 6 MIA. 2. 36 B-26's are dispatched to the Poix/Nord Airfield; they all return early when they are unable to contact the escort fighters, RAF Spitfires.

22/23 August 1943

Leverkusen: 462 aircraft - 257 Lancasters, 192 Halifaxes, 13 Mosquitos.

The IG Farben factory was chosen as the aiming point for this raid and it was hoped that some of the bombs would hit this important place. There was thick cloud over the target area and there was a partial failure of the Oboe signals. Bombs fell over a wide area; at least 12 other towns in and near the Ruhr recorded bomb damage. 3 Lancasters and 2 Halifaxes lost, 1.1 per cent of the force.

12 Mosquitos to the Ruhr and 6 to Hamburg, 47 aircraft minelaying in the Frisians and off Texel, 7 OTU sorties. No losses.
