The story
For the Battalion, the move forward next day to the concentration area at EMSDETTEN-on the River EMS, between MUNSTER and RHEINE-was a new experience. Here for the first time, we were travelling through a large stretch of Germany where battles had been fewer and where civilians still lived-as opposed to the battle-town, flooded and depopulated districts we had known west of the RHINE. In passing through BOCHOLT we were able to see, better than we had before, the effect of heavy bombing on a town of any size.
