The story
Two German soldiers surrendered to a solitary American soldier in Barneville, on the west coast of the Cherbourg peninsula, in France, on June 20, 1944. The Americans pushed through the town like a whirlwind after the Germans who are now in full retreat for Cherbourg.
The prisoners were turned over to the local police and lodged in the town’s jail. (AP Photo)
