Flight of Hurricane I L1614 and Sergeant G L Nowell on 1940-05-16

On 1940-05-16, Pilot G L Nowell (Sergeant, RAF) with an unknown servicenumber, flew a Hurricane I with serial L1614 for this duty: Patrol. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: Crash landed ?. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 87. The location for the map is the English Channel. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Nowell: he was safe. There is no commemoration location known.

Gary Nowell, a former fighter pilot with the RAF, stayed as a paying guest at my home in Eastbourne for about 2-3 years in the 1950s.

After an air fight on May 16, 1940 with German Dorniers, the propeller of the Hurricane L1614, under the command of Sergeant Gareth Nowell, was shot away on a mission to protect Lille on May 16, 1940, the pilot of the Hurricane Squadron 87 made an emergency landing on a field in Goeferdinge just next to Geraardsbergen, this field was just next to a road along which refugees moved. He was able to land his device but failed to set fire to the fuel tanks.
