On Thursday, 24 February 1944, (a part of) the aircraft of the 115 squadron (RAF), took off for a mission to Schweinfurt in Germany from a station (airfield) in or near Witchford.
One of the crew members was Flight Lieutenant J C Hornby. He departed for his mission at 18:50.
He flew with a Avro Lancaster (type II, with serial LL701 and code KO-F). His mission and of the other crew members was planned for Friday, 25 February 1944.

Hello,

Thank you Fred. We continue the search!

An update for this info.

My great uncle Francis Leonard Kennedy was not the tail gunner as once thought. He was listed as the Mid Upper Gunner.

Also, we have now spoken with 4 relatives of family of the crew from Lancaster LL701.

A private Facebook group has been created for relatives to commemorate information, photos and stories of the crew of LL701.

Should any family see this and wish to join the address is:

Hello,

During recent family research, we found information for your site that you might find interesting.

For Lancaster LL701 (KO-F) my cousin and I were pointed towards a page that transcribes the Luftwaffe night fighters logs.

My Great Uncle Pilot Officer Leonard Francis Kennedy was the tail gunner on this mission to Schweinfurt.

Looks like we have narrowed down the location of the downed bombers whereabouts and we feel it is no longer lost without a trace.

www.fredtrendle.de/images/pdf/Buchauszug-Februar-1944-Nacht.pdf

On the 3rd page and 4th paragraph in German:

115 Sqn. (RAF) / Avro Lancaster Mk. II / # LL701 / Operation Schweinfurt / cause unknown / in the North Sea / Air Lieutenant James Clement Hornby / 7 lost

If we find further information we will continue to update you.

Thank you,

Chris Thomson
