  • lancaster.jpg
On Saturday 02 October 1943, a member of the 619 Sqdn, Flight Sergeant K G Mortlock, took off from Woodhall Spa in the United Kingdom. His mission is mentioned elsewhere on Back to Normandy. You can find the other details of this mission by searching here. Training and cargo flights are not separately mentioned as a mission. The plane left at 18:25.

He flew with a Avro Lancaster (type III, serial EE110, code PG-U).

Campaign report of the USAAF:

(Eighth Air Force): VIII Bomber Command Mission 106: 349 B-17's are dispatched to the industrial area of Emden, Germany; led by 2 B-17 pathfinders, 339 hit the target at 1557-1603 hours; they claim 15-6-12 Luftwaffe aircraft; 2 B-17's are lost and 34 damaged; casualties are 2 WIA and 21 MIA. The B-17's are escorted by 227 P-47's who claim 5-3-1 Luftwaffe aircraft; 1 P-47 is damaged. In addition to the above, 21 B-24's are dispatched to Woensdrecht Airfield, The Netherlands; the target is obscured by clouds and the mission is aborted.

VIII Air Support Command Mission 75: 72 B-26's are dispatched to the St Omer/Longuenesse Airfield in France; because of cloud cover, only 6 hit the target at 1715 hours; the remainder refrain from bombing because the target is in occupied territory; 12 B-26's are damaged; casualties are 1 KIA and 4 WIA. VIII Bomber Command Mission 107: 2 B-17's join the Royal Air Force (RAF) in a night mission to Munich; no losses or casualties.

Campaign report of the RAF:

2/3 October 1943

294 Lancasters of 1, 5 and No 8 Groups and 2 B-17s - to Munich. 8 Lancasters lost, 2.7 per cent of the force. Visibility over the target was clear but the initial marking was scattered. Heavy bombing developed over the southern and south-eastern districts of Munich but later stages of the raid fell up to 15 miles back along the approach route. Most of this inaccurate bombing was carried out by No 5 Group aircraft, which were again attempting their 'time-and-distance' bombing method independently of the Pathfinder marking. The No 5 Group crews were not able to pick out the Wurmsee lake, which was the starting point for their timed run.

8 Mosquitos to Cologne and Gelsenkirchen, 117 aircraft minelaying at various places from Lorient to Heligoland, 21 OTU sorties. 1 Halifax minelayer lost.

With thanks to the RAF and USAAF.net!
