Flight of Spitfire V BL532 and Flying Officer D F Prentice on 1943-09-04

On 1943-09-04, Pilot D F Prentice (Flying Officer, RAF) with an unknown servicenumber, flew a Spitfire V with serial BL532 for this duty: Ramrod S31. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: Abandoned. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 416. The location for the map is the English Channel. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Prentice: he died, but circumstances of death are unknown. There is no commemoration location known.

277 Sqdn RAF ASR B Flight Hawkinge ORB summary -
"At 18:45 we learnt of other aircraft in trouble 12 miles NW Somme Estuary and F/O Smith with W/O Hughes and F/S Campbell (Walrus 2282) were scrambled in Walrus.
They were vectored 177 degrees 54 miles base, 10 miles off Somme Estuary.
Report 'Walrus took off with 2 Spitfires as escort to position given. Then steered 340 degrees for 4 minutes and found pilot, F/O Prentice in his dinghy. R/T transmitter was u/s. Came back and landed at Base in darkness.'"
277 Sqdn RAF B Flight Hawkinge ORB record -
F/O Prentice of 416 Squadron Merston picked up from dinghy.
177 Base 32 miles. His condition was good. (Walrus landed at 20:25).
