My dad was on Empire Newton from the beginning of June (possibly before -- I'll check the paperwork). She sailed several times from Millwall docks, London, to Normandy, arriving for the first time, I believe, on D-Day plus 1. Dad recalled going in at Juno beach first time, then Sword and Omaha on subsequent voyages. He could recall HMS Belfast firing on Nazi positions ashore. In his copy of Cornelius Ryan's Longest Day, he has circled a ship in a picture of several vessels and added: "Empire Newton, MT57, known as 'Empty Beans'."
