Avro Lancaster III (ND624 PM-F) crashed at Sistig on 1944-05-25

Information the crew of ND624.

Tomorrow (25 May 2016) is the anniversary of the death of my Uncle Joe ( bottom right of the photo) who was the navigator of Lancaster Mk 111 ND624 (PM-F - 103 Sqn, RAF Elseham Wolds). After bombing the railway marshalling yards in Aachen, the aircraft crashed at Sistig, 6km S of Gemund, Eifel District, Germany at approximately 02.24 mostly likely shot down by Oblt Joseph Kraft. The crew is buried together at Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.

Hallo together,
next year the dead of the 7 young man will be 80 Years gone ... I am a descandant from the people in the little village called "Sistig", who remembers the crash from the Lancaster - like my parents. I want to create a memorial cross at the place of crash - with the names an the fotos of the 7 man who found dead in the early morning at 25. May 1944.
I think, a memorial cross at the place of crash is a "last honour" and a remembrance of the 7 young men, who died in the horror of war - without a chance of a personal future ...

The 25. May next Year ist a Saturday - and it will be a good day to inaugurate the memorial cross with a little celebration. I would be happy, when someone from the families or from the military would be there - I invite you heartly! - Please contact me if you see a chance to visit us at the 25./26. ich bin ein Nachfahre aus dem Ort Sistig - meine Eltern haben als Kinder den Absturz der Lancaster miterlebt (... und nachher das Aluminium des zerstörten Flugzeugs eingesammelt ...). Die toten Besatzungsmitglieder wurden meines Wissens nach vom damaligen Ortsbürgermeister Pütz und Pfarrer Berens mit einigen Freiwilligen bei Nacht und Nebel noch geborgen und an der Kirche notdürftig aber in allen Ehren beigesetzt, bevor die SS am nächsten Tag die Absturzstelle sicherte ... - später wurden die Toten dann umgebettet.
Wir würden den gestorbenen britischen Soldaten an der Absturzstelle gerne ein Gedenkkreuz aufstellen und dafür ggf. auch die Portraitfotos verwenden - es wäre schön, wenn sich der ein oder andere Angehörige melden würde ... - es dauert ja nicht mehr lange, dass sich der schreckliche Todestag zum 80. Mal jährt ...
