99 Infantry Battalion (Separate) (USA) to Heroldsbach
The 99th, which was now bivouaced in a woods about one mile from Eitersfeld, left this location on the 21st of April and arrived at Heroldsbach, Germany on the same date. Once more each company was allotted sectors and towns to police and the same type of work was carried out. Information was offered by Polish laborers and the German people themselves as to the whereabouts of hidden groups of by-passed Germans. The Germans had a healthy fear of and contempt for the SS organization and now that the danger of retribution has passed they were happy to inform on it at every opportunity. Heroldsbach lies about 15 miles north of Nurenberg and many prisoners fleeing the fighting in the city were taken. Despite elaborate disguises and excuses, the Nazis were ferreted out of their hideaways by an effective intelligence cross-examination by German-speaking members of the unit.
