Captain Francis "Toots" Walters was a member of Company L, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division. Walters was in Normandy from June 14 until his death from a head wound on June 28. Ironically, the 314th had experienced intense combat in and around Cherbourg between June 18 and 26, and Captain Walters was killed while the last pockets of enemy resistance were being cleared.
