June 6th 1941. German paratroopers gather and execute every single male citizen of the village Kontomari in retaliation for their involvement in the resistance against them during the Battle of Crete. It is considered as the first mass execution of Cretan population of the war. In total 23 men executed. Only one male managed to escape by running right at the time bullets were hitting his fellow villagers near him. Photographers were in the spot and captured everything including the moment when the survivor started running and he can be seen doing so in the distance. You can find more by typing "execution in Kontomari".
