Castle Archdale X8CA (A)
Alt Name: Lough Erne. Opened: 1941. Status in 1944: RAF. Flying Boat Station. Current use: Recreation. Remarks: Now a large caravan site, with vans and toilet blocks and so forth set out on and around the concrete dispersal tracks and circles. The large Sunderland sized slipway survives. RAF buildings remain including an electricity generation station. A curious shaped dock, finished just in time to be no longer needed, is shaped snug to a flying boat bow and hull with jetties alongside port and starboard to access engines etc. Woodland walks have way points at ammunition stores, and concrete nissen hut bases. In the yard of the former castle there is a small WW2 museum amid displays more to do with nature and conservation.
