At the date of 13-02-1945, time: 1100, the aircraft type Tempest has been lost. The location of the plane was found at: Lierop (gem. Someren). The unit of crew and plane is: 274 Sqdn. First flyer rank: Flying Officer, name: R.E. Mooney. The plane belonged to the Allied forces.
I am a retired British Airways 747 Captain and I was told of your excellent site by a friend, Ernie Cromie, a well-known aviation expert here in Northern Ireland. I am an ex-military pilot and during my training on Queens University Air Squadron in Belfast I met Mr. R E Mooney who was a Tempest pilot on 274 Squadron, we have a lot of information on him. We know that he did survive the crash landing after being hit by flak and after crashing he was helped from the wreckage by a local Dutch farmer, the story goes that Bob returned to the site in the mid-1970s to meet the man who saved him. I believe a local paper either in Belfast or Holland ran the story but we have not been able to verify this. I can confirm that Bob Mooney was alive and well as I met him !! There was another R E Mooney in the RAF but not on 274 squadron.
